While researching Lincoln this week I came across the unhappy story of Little St Hugh, a young boy whose death caused a lethal backlash of blame and recrimination which attracted the attention of the king, Henry III, himself.

The story revolves around a young boy called Hugh. Born around he was probably 9 years old when he disappeared on 31st. Hugh of Lincoln was the son of William, Lord of Avalon.

He was born at Avalon Castle in Burgundy and was raised and educated at a convent at Villard-Benoit after his mother died when he was eight. He was professed at fifteen, ordained a deacon at nineteen, and was made prior of a monastery at Saint-Maxim.

While visiting the Grande Chartreuse with his prior in St. Hugh of Lincoln, the only professed Carthusian monk ever to be a bishop in England, was born about at Avalon near Grenoble in Imperial Burgundy.

He was the third and youngest son of a knight, who retired to the cloister of the Austin Canons at Villarbenolt after the death of his wife, and took Hugh with him, then only eight years old.
